Well, it seems that I got to speak about Hybrid evrery time I do a WordPress review! This time it is again a new child theme for the Hybrid Framework theme. With a magazine style it shows once again that Framework themes are definitely an important opportunity for WordPress theme development!

In a nutshell, a free WordPress theme, clean and simple, great for a personal simple blog, and it has nice colors for a photoblog too. Its is actually integrating lots of different functions for photobloggers, so if you are one go grab this theme right away!

Christmas WordPress theme

Ok, I can hear you from here, I am too late for Christmas! All right, I know that, but have a closer look: a magazine-style theme, two sidebars, the psd file is available for all changes you want, and it is brought to us by Samashing magazine. Well I personally like this theme, I think it is worth to have a look at it!

FREEmium WordPress theme

I guess the name of the theme says it all: a Free theme with Premium functions. If we add to that a fresh design it makes it a theme we will defintely hear about in the future: have a look at the demo if you are not convinced!

MyHome Pro

This one is a Premium theme but I wanted to speak about it as it is now how WereWP looks like! I really wanted to get a more professional look for WereWP, and I think MyHomepro is a good WordPress theme. It includes a lifestream which can be set easily through the admin panel.

Coldstone

You may remember elegantthemes.com from last week : a small theme club proposing great and original themes. Turns out a new theme is out! Coldstone is a new theme quite multifunctional. With three different post layouts (blog, magazine, business) it can fit to everybody. If you have a look at all the small details added to the theme (widgetized areas, drop-down menus), that makes it a really good theme !

Modularity

This one is not as new as the others in this review but very interesting: if you own a portfolio or photo website Modularity is a great choice thanks to a big centered image navigation panel. With more options for your photos and videos it has to be counted within the best portfolio WordPress themes. This theme is Premium and will cost you 75$.

Revolution Vert theme

Well I may be a bit early with this one, it is not released yet. However Jason Schuller talked about it on his personal blog and even offered us a demo version! From what you can see it looks like a great theme already, another one among Portfolio or photo WordPress themes. So be ready! Within a few weeks we should be able to download it for free at revolutiontwo.om!

Leviathan and Old School

I have already talked about the Hybrid Framework WordPress theme: a good iniative from Justin tadlock and a reference for the future in my opinion. From a parent theme composed of 13 page templates, you can build your own child theme very easily. While there was child theme released with the first versions of Hybrid, Justin now seems to focus on that and released two different child themes these last weeks: Old School and Leviathan. Apart from being two good WordPress themes they can also be used as a reference to build your own personal child theme. I consequently advise you to have a look, the possibilities of the Hybrid framework are really amazing!

These two themes show a good example of how Justin has helped the WordPress community since last year. He keeps trying new things and showing the way to many other WordPress developers. His latest decision to release ALL his themes as GPL will certainly make some noise within the community, as his Options and Structure themes were already important themes.

So go on Justin, WordPress fans are watching you!

Here on this blog, I will cover different aspects of blog redesign, from scratch until a perfectly running blog. Do not hesitate to add your comments whenever you feel it is necessary, they will provide an update on my post.

Let’s split the redesign in 10 steps, from the first redesign thought until the feedback you get from your readers.

1. Why should you redesign?

As you start thinking of a new outfit for your blog you may wonder why would you need a redesign. As a matter of fact you should really be asking yourself this simple question, simply because a redesign is an important step in your blog’s life, and it can have important consequences on your readership.

Basically, a new design should either bring some changes to your blog, either correct mistakes you made with your previous design. If you are trying to reach a new audience then yes, a redesign can help. If you did not update your blog for a few years then yes, adapt your blog to the actual tools at your service can be useful.

All in all your redesign should bring some benefits to your blogs. If not then reconsider the redesign, it may not be such a great idea…

2. What do you want to show with your blog?

The first question that comes to my mind when we are talking about blog design is: "which kind of blog are we talking about?" Indeed in the last years blogging has changed and we can now find many different blogs: photoblogs, twitter-blogs (see tumblr), social bookmarking blogs, personal blogs, magazine blogs, … Well, you got it.

If we are talking about redesign, you should definitely find out what is it that you want to show to your readers? Will it be very personal with long articles, or rather a photoblog where the only text would be the picture title? Of course design will be totally different for these two cases. The color scheme has to be different, the page structure as well… And you may want to add less important things to share with your readers: links, tweets, other blogs, pictures, videos, …

If you plan on advertising on your blog you should also plan it now and decide what kind of ads you would like to display, the size of the importance it has for you.

3. How will you share your content with your readers?

As we have seen above, you have defined what you wanted to show on your blog. However you will have to consider the expectations of your readers as well. Indeed by examining what your readers were checking on your previous design you can get to know what they like, and consequently what they will expect to stay on the next design. If you find out most of them click on your social networking profiles you may reconsider your primary objectivesand decide to make it become more important on you blog.

Then again, your readers probably got used to your blog. If you were using a precise blogging software you should probably think twice before changing it. There are a lot of them all over Internet, and you may look around, some of them can propose lots of interesting  opportunities specific to your goals. Personally I use WordPress. Do not hesitate to have a look at this Blog software comparison chart if you need help choosing!

4. 3 things to check before to start Photoshop

Well we are doing great so far, you have defined your goals, the tools you will use according to your readers’ expectations, it is now time for real design! But wait a bit before to start Photoshop or any other designing software you are using! There are a few important steps not to forget:

- Find out a good color scheme for your blog, fitting with your readers’ expectations. The following links will help you to do so: Contrast and Meaning, Code Couleur (in French), Brand colors – Colorize Your Brand – How Color Builds Your Brand

- Look at what the others are doing! That may be the most important. Look at your competitors and neighbors, they are your inspiration: Webcreme and  WeloveWP are two spaces where you can find inspiration.

- Drawing a good layout design on paper. Illustrator and Photoshop are great tools but it is sometimes much easier to put down your ideas on paper. You will see immediately what is good and what is not, and you will be able to get a precise idea of what you want in your head.

And last but not least, reconsider yourself before to start doing everything on your own. You may have time, HTML/CSS knowledge and a few books in case of, you may not be good enough for a well designed blog. 5. Designing a good layout

Well I could help you find thousands of Photoshop tutorials helping you building your own layout by yourself but I think Google is a common friend, there are so many tutorials you will be able to find by yourself! If you have any interesting resource however, please let me know!

6. Coding your blog from your .psd file

As I said above I chose to use WordPress for my blog and I have to say I am happy with it. This step will be different depending on the choice you made. Here below I selected a few important links to help you build your own blog template from your .psd file:

You can of course choose to base your template on a Framework like Hybrid Framework WordPress theme. That is another possibility to adapt your idea to this blogging software.

7. Add the tools you need

One of the great things about WordPress (and other blogging softwares) is that you can build almost everything from the software core. By adding plugins and extensions you can fit your website to your needs. We were speaking about social networking in the lines above. That is when Sociablecomes in! This great plugin will allow you to finish each of your posts by a Social links line.

Of course it is just one plugin among hundreds. I invite you to read this post for further information about some mandatory pluginsfor your WordPress blog!

8. Communicate about your redesign

We have talked about the advantage of redesigning in the beginning of this article: one of them was the buzz: people discover your new design, talk about it around them, and you get more and more visitors.

That is of course if you communicate about it! Imagine some of your readers are not even coming to your website anymore. They are fine with their RSS feed reader and can read all your posts easily. To let them know about the changes, write a post about it and invite them to come have a look. That is the first step you need. You could even describe your redesign through a tutorial!

Then the second step would be to spread the word on a much wider range. CSS galleries will help you in that if you respect a few rules in order to get published. Read carefully the posts below to get to know more about CSS galleries:

9. Ask for feedback

You may have worked on this design for days, but there will always be small issues left. Ask your readers to give you feedback about that and help you finish your redesign smoothly! They are your best testers!

10. Monitor and stay open for changes

Within a few weeks you can quickly discover what your readers like, what are the tools they use and what they do not use at all. It may be useless for your readers, they may not find it through all your content. In any case you can make a few more changes to put this part of your content in the front, or simply delete it from your website if nobody used it.

That is also how your design should grow up time by time and that is how you will keep it updated until the next redesign! Until then, do not hesitate to come back here time by time to check for other articles about WordPress for WP lovers! You can also subscribe to my RSS feed!

However there are a few plugins that I always install at first. I believe them to be the core of WordPress. Who knows, maybe one day we will find them included in every WordPress installation!

So what is important for a website and for its webmaster? At first I’d say monitoring, don’t you think?

1. Monitoring

Knowing who comes, when and from which browser is something important to me. And of course, what feels better than seeing your number of visitors growing after an interesting post? For that reason I always install two monitoring plugins with every WordPress installation.

Feedburner

Yes, RSS feed is important. Even more if you have a blog. Of course you could let it as it is and check the amount of subscribers in Google reader, but FeedBurner will tell you so much more about your readers. So I always set up a Feedburner account, and then I install Feedburner Feedsmith, the plugin by Feedburner.

Google Analytics

For the rest of the monitoring, Google analytics does a great job for me! Clear, complete, it offers varieties of settings to know everything about your readers. The last update the google team offered us brings again more functionalities to a good web stat software.

Thus for your website you will need a Google account and a Google analytics plugin. There are many and I personally use a simple one, but you can have a look at the other possibilities, it looks like some of them have real advanced settings.

So you can now see who is coming to check your website, who is subscribing to check the updates. Nobody came yet? Why not spread the word about your new great website?

2. Spreading your website

Once your website is ready, you may want the whole world to know about it. A few plugins will help you to do that.

Google sitemaps

Creating a sitemap of your website will obviously help the search engines to crawl the whole website content. Google XML Sitemaps WordPress plugin does more: every time you create a post or edit an existing one your sitemap is changed and all major search engines are informed about it. That will definitely help your website to appear among Google results faster.

To finish with Google, there is one last thing I do on Google pages when I set up a blog: I sign it on Google Webmaster tools. There you can set all Google results preferences and see when and how Google bot crawls your website.

Sociable

Nowadays another way to look for information or to browse good articles is social bookmarking. Digg, Delicious, Technorati and many other social bookmarking websites allow every user to “vote” for articles and websites they like. If they appreciate browsing through your websites content, why not helping them to share it with the other members of their favourite social bookmarking network?

With Sociable you can choose between dozens of different bookmarking websites to display at the bottom of your posts or everywhere on your website. I personally install it on all blogs as it is a useful service to offer to your readers at the bottom of the posts. I also install WP related posts on some blogs, as it is again a useful tool to propose to your readers after they read a post entry. It is important to remember that a lot of your readers arrive to your blog on a post page and not on the welcome page. Consequently it is always better to propose them something else to do after they read your post; sharing it with others, go read another post or comment are three different choices for different readers. You can also add a link to your RSS feed as it can be a third opportunity!

All In One SEO

As you are at it, why not optimizing your website for all search engines? The first thing I do after setting up a WordPress installation is changing the permalink structure to something more “pretty”: I personally use the following structure: /%category%/%postname%/ You can check the codex for more information about permalinks.

Then I always install the very same SEO plugin, All In One SEO Pack. It helps you optimizing your titles, your META tags, …

So it is done, you are now ready to welcome visitors!

3. Security

It is great to be well known but it also has its consequences. If you don’t pay attention you will quickly find out that a successful website attracts all kinds of spammers, hackers, … Luckily WordPress can protect us (knock on wood!) with regular updates to avoid any possible hack.

But as you can never be too careful, a few plugins help you look after your website.

Akismet

Installed by default on every WordPress installation, it has worked great for me so far. You can find some others around but Akismet does the job I am sure. I always activate it with my WordPress installations.

Database Backup

You never know what can happen to your blog. Backup your database every day is a must i my opinion. It can avoid you many problems the day your website goes down.

WP-DB Backup does the job by proposing either an immediate backup or scheduled backup that can be sent by mail or stocked on the FTP.

WP Super Cache

On high traffic pages or in cases when there can be some high dugg pages, I always install WP super cache. It is in my opinion a good insurance that the reader will never suffer from low speed loading pages. After all, isn’t it the main reason for all of us to leave a page?

WP Security Scan

Another great tool to protect yourself from hackers is WP Security Scan. This great and indispensable plugin will scan your WordPress installation for security vulnerabilities and suggests corrective actions. That is another “Must” for every WordPress installation.

Now you know what are the mandatory plugins to me? Have I missed something? Let me know your opinion!

But WordPress 2.7 is not just about comments. Let’s see more about WordPress improvements:

WordPress 2.7: improvements

Threaded comments

In this latest release you will be able to have threaded and paged comments, like on Digg. Well, you got it by yourself, that means a bit of work for developers while adapting your own WordPress theme to the new comment system. Can you do that? Yes, thanks to the great tutorial by Otto! Justin Tadlock has also proposed us a method to create a WordPress 2.6 and 2.7 compatible theme!

New Admin panel design

The admin panel has been redesigned once again. You can already have a look at it in this WordPress blog post by downloading WordPress 2.7 Beta version, or have a look at the wireframes that were used as a base for the redesign work. You can also log in to the WordPress test blog and see for yourself: the login name is admin and the password demo.

As you can see the admin navigation menu will be located on the left side in the next version. We can also notice the introduction of colors and new icons that make this admin panel a little bit more alive than before.

This new organization also gives you more space to write and manage your blog, as the menu bar can be minimized easily.

That is another huge improvement with this WordPress 2.7 release, you can download and install plugins without ftp client or even the WordPress plugin directory.

Quick Edit Post

From one single screen you can edit all the important properties of your document: category, tags, status, comments, …

Keyboard shortcuts

Along with WordPress 2.7 the ability to use keyboard shortcuts to browse and moderate comments was introduced. Here is a summary for all these shortcuts.

Sticky posts by default

Along with many other WordPress plugins, WP-Sticky won’t be necessary with the latest WordPress release. There are many other plugins that will have the same future. Here below is a list of some of them:

• Comment Timeout (automatically closes comments on blog entries after a user- configurable period of time)
• Paged comments (allows comment paging)
• Brian’s Threaded Comments (allows comment threading)
• Plugin manager(allows you to install plugins from the admin panel)
• WordPress automatic upgrade(upgrades to the latest WordPress version)
• And some others I have forgotten!

As you can see that is a lot of newbies for our favourite software and then lots of work to do to upgrade your theme to all these possibilities. So… We have work to do! :)

You should consequently find a way to push your best content to the front, make it accessible, simple, and still unique and eye-catching. Can you do that, and more important, how will you do it? All these questions do not always have easy answers. By showing too much you can ruin your chances and drive away the potential clients due to complicated navigation? By not showing enough you are not attractive anymore.

A way to choose a simple design with good navigation can be to turn to WordPress. There are new portfolio themes every day, made for that. Thus you avoid diving onto code and concentrate on your words and the work you want to display. However there are many portfolio WordPress themes around here, how to choose the best?

Do you remember last January, a big buzz spreading in WordPress community? Small Potato had just launched his 5$ Theme club. In a nutshell, a ridiculous amount of money for a bunch of Premium themes from one of the most famous WordPress designers around. Well 10 months have passed, but Theme clubs have become something more and more popular. It is now time for an overview of the best of them.

1. WPDesigner 5$ Theme Club

I first spoke about WPDesigner as he was the first to introduce the idea. After a few weeks he even launched a big campaign to give away 20 000 club accountsfor free. It turned out to be a big success and the first themes he published definitely worthed the 5 dollars. However in March Small Potato sold his website, and since then no new article was posted, and nobody heard about new themes releases for club members. I personally regret to see such a great website go away like that but we can still hope that the new owner will give us a sign some day…

Speaking of that, if you  spent 5 $ and became a member of this club, Small Potato started refunding everybody as he promised. No doubt now that he was and still stays trustworthy and should be respected among WordPress community. It is a pity we cannot say the same about the new owner of WPdesigner…

2. Woo Themes Club

Woo Themes club was created by Adii in July of this year and proposes Premium like themes for different prices. You can either buy one of them individually or become a club member and get themes, support and source files. However the prices are a bit higher than Small Potato’s 5 bucks: you will spend 250$ for a 6-month single membership. But the themes are really advanced, I invite you to have a look for yourselves, some of them could be interesting.

3. Theme Hybrid club

This Theme club was launched by Justin Tadlock in August and makes good use of the Child themes (if you are not clear with these ones, go have a look at Themeshaper’s post about it). The result can be compared to the Woo Themes, although there is a free membership option.

4.  Elegant Themes

Elegant Themes also started this year and delivers great themes for a much cheaper price than most of the other theme clubs. The latest one, Studio Blue, has been reviewed on WP-Candy and it shows well the high quality of these themes. Like most of the Premium themes released lately it makes great use of theme options.

To conclude all these theme clubs are one good option to choose between a bunch of great quality WordPress, for a reasonable price. If you consider buying a Premium theme you should definitely have a look at these websites and consider all the offers. By the way if you know any other theme club do ot hesitate to let me know in the comments!

5. Now there’s more…

Now that said, what about other opportunities, and the future of all this theme club market? Indeed the Premium themes themselves do not fit much with the Open source model of WordPress. It has been criticized many times, and there seems to be something coming up to shake up the whole Premium marketin November (dixit Matt). This has been announced by the very same person who started the whole Premium WordPress theme idea, Brian Gardner. In the beginning of October he announced that his Revolution theme club would end. Along with that breaking news we also got to know that he will work on a totally new conceptwith Jason Schuller, who runs WP Elements. Well that sounds promising I cannot wait to see what is coming for us, but seeing who are the 2 men behind this idea I expect some great changes to help WordPress expanding!
